Wartime gas shortages resulted in the cancellation of both the annual Memorial Day Golf Tournament and the Dance which traditionally followed it. Ted Vilord, Steward of the Golf Club, announced that many members were walking to the course and caddying for themselves. Some were coming on horseback or on bicycles., he reported. (Bristow)
