This Day in History: 1940-11-03
A bucket brigade prevented the total destruction of the home of William Suffern on Route 2 (now Route 17) near the Mahwin Farm at 6:45am. The tenet was asleep when workers at the Mahwin Farms saw the blaze and called in the alarm. Before the 35 members of the Fire Department and Hose Company No. 2 arrived to fight the blaze, the Mahwin farm workers and neighbors organized a bucket brigade to check the spread of the flames.
