This Day in History: 1932-10-20
At the Township Committee Meeting, strong protests were made to the refusal of the State to eliminate the grade crossing on Route 2 at Ramapo Avenue. It is estimated that the construction of a bridge there would cost between $75,000 and $100,000, but residents insisted that the saving in lives and injuries would justify this expenditure. Abraham Banta was particularly strenuous in his insistence that property values in the area would be seriously reduced if the grade crossing was not removed. The Township Committee agreed to transmit petitions circulated by residents on the subject but expressed the opinion that the most the State could be expected to do was to install a traffic light at the corner.
