This Day in History: 1931-10-24
The George Washington Bridge was opened to impressive ceremonies. The idea of a trans-Hudson bridge was first proposed in 1863, revived in the 1890s and seriously undertaken in 1921 when the NY-NJ compact was signed. The $20,000,000 bond issue was oversubscribed in 1926 and ground was broken in 1927. It is expected that the entire road network of Bergen County will have to be redesigned to accommodate the new bridge traffic. It will shorten the commuting time for many Mahwah residents who drive to the city. (Bristow)
