This Day in History: 1928-03-11
Fire gutted the newly decorated basement of the Airmont Lutheran Church. Several thousand dollar damage was done in the blaze which was discovered just before seven in a Sunday morning. The fire departments of Suffern, Tallmans and Mahwah responded quickly and saved the rest of the building from destruction. A contractor had just finished extensive alterations and repairs to the building but the Church’s insurance had not yet been extended to the new work so the congregation was to have to bear the entire loss. The Pastor, the REv. Frank Jones was at a loss to explain the fire. Those who cared for the fires in the church were always very careful, he said.
