Lewis Gross of Mahwah was sentenced to pay $14,256.26 to the estate of the late Emerson McMillan for cutting down nearly 5,000 green oak trees on the McMillan Estate, Gross had a contract with the McMillans to cut all dead chesnut and oak trees to be used for railroad ties. One of the jurors also had visited the site and tramped around in the snow to inspect the damage. He said the jury award was not excessive. Another observed, however said that all the timber on the estate wasn’t $14,000. Gross is a lumber mill owner.
