This Day in History: 1921-07-31
A severe hailstorm devastated Mahwah and Greenwood Lake but missed Suffern and Ramsey. Stones as large as 3″ in Mahwah and 6″ in Greenwood Lake were found after the storm. Gardens and crops were ruined, holes were punched in the tops of cars and even in the roofs of houses. Over 1,000 panes of glass were broken in Paterson’s greenhouse, just north of Ramsey. Housewives gathered up the hailstones to replenish their ice boxes and to freeze their ice cream. (Bristow)
