This Day in History: 1921-07-02
Oliver Aston of Ramsey, an amateur wireless operator, received detailed descriptions of the Dempsey-Carpenter fight direct from ringside. Aston was a Navy radio operator during the war and has kept up his wireless since at home. He said the reception was more distinct than a telephone conversation. He could hear the roar of the crowd and the gong before and after the rounds. Dempsey knocked out Carpenter in 1:66 in the 4th round. (Bristow)
