This Day in History: 1912-08-24
The annual picnic of the Mahwah Sunday School went by special trolley to East Side Park in Paterson. Especially attractive were the tennis courts for the older students and the merry-go-round for the younger ones. There were a number of athletic competitions. Some of the winners included: Ball throw: boys over 14, Luther Young, 62 yards. Girls over 14, Bessie Mabie, 31 yards. Girls under 14, Minnie Hopper, 23 yards. Luther Young also won the running broad jump (10 1/2 feet). Jessie Slavin won three events for boys under 14: running broad jump (8 feet), standing broad jump (5 1/2 feet), and 100 yard dash. The 440 yard dash was won by Louis Winter in 53 seconds. The expedition returned to Mahwah about 5:15. (Bristow)
