This Day in History: 1909-07-04
George Crocker provided 4th of July treats for the workers and tenants on his estate. Ice cream, cake, and fruits were served early in the evening followed by a display of fireworks costing several hundred dollars. The fireworks were particularly effective silhouetted against the Ramapo Hills which echoed the happy sounds. At the end a pole wrapped with 20,000 firecrackers was set off. The crowd, including many who had driven several miles to see the fireworks, responded with a hearty Three Cheers for Mr. Crocker. (Bristow)
