The Lenape people inhabited the land we call New Jersey for 12,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. The land records contain some of the earliest written accounts of interaction with Native Americans in New Jersey.
This program will explore the contrast between the Native American and European concepts of property rights. It will try to explain the clash of cultures, the influence of technology and alcohol and the European lust for land, at the expense of the Lenape.
Presented by independent scholar, historian and land title expert, Joseph A. Grabas, CTP, NTP, and author of the award winning book Owning New Jersey: Historic Tales of War, Property Disputes & the Pursuit of Happiness.
This program made possible through a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission.
