Running the Estate: the Staff of Ringwood Manor
with Sue Shutte
November 14, 2022 @ 7:30pm
Presented in-person & online.
The employees of Ringwood Manor were the backbone of the estate. Staff positions not only included the household servants, but also the hundreds of people who worked on the property to keep the 22,000 acre estate running. This presentation will explore numerous employees in paid positions such as dairy maids, farmers, blacksmiths, coachmen, and of course iron workers. These employees came from a multitude of backgrounds and cultures, including many members of the local Ramapough community. Details about known employees will be shared along with vintage images from the Louis P. West collection, the Ringwood Manor archives, and the Ringwood Public Library archives.
Sue Shutte has a BA in architectural history from Rutgers and an MA in Cornell in Historical Preservation Planning. She has been at the state-owned manor for almost twenty years.
This is a hybrid event and will be presented in-person and online via Zoom.
