Les Paul in Mahwah
A Permanent Exhibit at the Mahwah Museum
The Mahwah Museum has a small but rich permanent exhibit featuring several historical aspects of Les Paul’s life and career. Visitors can learn about his inventions and innovations including sound-on-sound recording and electric guitar features while viewing a display of one-of-a-kind precious guitars made especially for Les set in and around a re-creation of the studio in which Les did his work.
Learn how this creative genius transformed rock, country and jazz music genres as we know them today. Get a sense of how he and Mary Ford performed for their weekly radio show from their home in Mahwah.
Before Les had his reel-to-reel tape deck in 1949, he recorded on a lathe which he made for himself. Using acetate discs, he recorded such numbers as ‘Lover’, ‘Nola’, and ‘Goofus’. Both the lathe and the reel-to-reel tape deck are on display at the Mahwah Museum.
The museum’s Les Paul display also includes a 1995 Les Paul Jimmy Page guitar, a 1987 Les Paul Standard guitar, and a 1969 Les Paul Custom guitar from Les’ personal collection.
Open late September through late June during normal visiting hours. Admission to the Les Paul exhibit is included with admission to the Mahwah Museum.
