In March last year, The National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom accepted the Huntoon and Van Rensalier Underground Railroad Site in the city of Paterson New Jersey, as one of the new listings. Jimmy Richardson and Flavia Alaya worked together to support this action taken by the National Park Service. This program will be the story of the Underground Railroad and other antislavery activism in North Jersey. Dr Alaya and Mr. Richardson will talk about their work, the astonishing level of activism they actually uncovered, and what more needs to be done to assure a more fact-based picture of the role of North Jersey in the anti-slavery and Underground Railroad narratives.
Jimmy Richardson is a native son and long-time community activist and historian of Paterson. Among his many achievements in the area of history are his work with the National Park Service on the history of the Negro League and Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson. He is often referred to as the chief historian of Paterson’s African American Community.
Flavia Alaya was a founding dean and faculty member of Ramapo College. Dr. Alaya is a biographer, autobiographer and cultural/public historian and has received many national grants to support her work. She is a long-time member of the New Jersey Historical Sites Council and has worked in many local
communities to save local history.
