This Day in History: 1920-08-13
The Tennessee Legislature ratified the 19th amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote. Tennessee is the 36th and decisive state making the amendment a part of the U.S. Constitution. Even though New Jersey has not ratified the amendment and the New Jersey Constitution limits the suffrage to males, women will be able to vote in state and local elections this fall. The National Constitution overrides the State Constitution. (Bristow)
