Collection Details
Tom and Joan Dunn came to Mahwah in 1968 and lived in a house on Karen Drive. They were residents until March 2025 when they moved from Indian Field to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains. In the interim, they lived for a time in a 1913 Cragmere house and later in a large ranch house on Flaming Arrow Road. Their children were all educated in the Mahwah Schools.
When the Old Station was dedicated, Tom heard the helicopter bringing Governor Richard Hughes to Mahwah for the dedication of the Old Station Museum and went down from Karen Drive to see what was going on. That was the beginning of his interest in the Mahwah Historical Society where he participated for a number of years. During this time, he did his first presentation about the Historic Homes of Cragmere, using an overhead projector and, later, slides that he had taken. As a lawyer in Hackensack, he was able to locate the deeds from the Mahwah Company, the owner and developer of Cragmere, to the first owners and to create a map of the original ownerships.
His programs about Cragmere have continued over the years, with newly developed information.
Tom served as the attorney for the Mahwah Planning Board in 1969-73 and, in that capacity, drafted the Controlled Economic Development zoning ordinance that allowed development of Ramapo Ridge condominiums, and the retail and commercial facilities on Mac Arthur Boulevard.
As a member of the Mahwah Historical Society in 1970-71 he was an advocate for the location of Ramapo College in Mahwah.
Tom became a member of the Mahwah Board of Education in 1977 and served there until 1982, During the period of his presidency from 1978-1980, he organized an effort to modernize and consolidate Mahwah High School into a single building rather than the 1955 campus style school. This was a community wide effort involving two citizens committees and a referendum that in 1979 won by 69 votes out of about 1500 total votes cast.
In [1986-87] he served as President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Mahwah Chamber of Commerce.
Tom was a member of the Board of Trustees of Ramapo College of New Jersey from 1993-2004. In 1997-2000 he served as Chair of that Board and in 2000 was honored as the College’s Distinguished Citizen by the Ramapo College Foundation. Upon the expiration of his term on the Board of Trustees he became a member of the Board of Governors of the Ramapo College Foundation.
From 2006-2014 he was a Board Member and, at various times held the offices of President and Treasurer of the Mahwah Museum Society. During that period he was involved in research and presentations for all exhibits. He has been a frequent speaker at Museum Society Programs on topics such as:
