Collection Details
Biographical / Historical Note: States Bogart Hagerman was born in Hohokus Township (Mahwah) on April 10, 1876 to States B. Hagerman, Sr. (1844-1894) and Sarah M. Bloodgood Hagerman (1854-1928). He was the brother of long time Mahwah stationmaster Henry Bogart Hagerman and the grandson of Andrew Hagerman (1816-1866) and Elizabeth Ann Hopper (182101857). He married Eguste (Gussie) C. Eglin, the daughter of Benjamin Eglin (a blacksmith and wagon builder), in 1898 and they moved to Ridgewood, NJ, where around 1902 he opened Ridgewood’s first garage on Prospect street, where he sold Ramblers. He sold the building to Ronald Hopper in 1916 and had opened a car dealership in New York City at 201 West 53rd Street by 1918.
Hagerman was keenly interested in bicycles and was a member of the Ramapo Valley Wheelmen and considered opening a bicycle dealership for the Mahwah area. In 1918, he operated an automobile business in New York City, a Ford Used Car Headquarters at 1700 Broadway, New York, NY.
He had one daughter, Mildred Olive Hagerman (1898-1983), who married Basil Hall. He was wideowed in 1910, when Eguste Hagerman died in December from diphtheria. Hagerman died in 1933 and is buried at the Mahwah Cemetery.
This collection was donated by Linda Schucht Straut (1941-2019), a long time resident of Mahwah who worked at the Mahwah Public Library for 25 years.
Collection Description: This collection consists of a small collection of Hagerman’s social and business correspondence from his years in Mahwah, a photo album of carte de vistes of visitors and relatives, and some miscelleanous documents.
Arrangement Description: The photo album is kept in its original order; documents have been arranged by type and date.
Separated Materials: No materials have been removed. Photos in the album have been digitized.

Box 2: Photo Album
A purple cloth covered album containing carte de viste photographs in black and white in sepia. Many are unlabeled, but there is a photographs of Henry Hagerman and likely other family members. There are photographs of children as well. This album has been digitized to preserve and protect the original album.
