This Day In History: 1958-02-28
A former ski trooper, Murray De Camp Speer, was chosen by the Mahwah Democratic Club as their candidate for the Township Committee. Speer was a resident of Valley Road. He had served in Alaska and the Alps during his three years in the army and received the Purple Heart during his wartime service. He had been the first President of the Tenth Division Ski Association. He announced that he would base his campaign on the idea that government should be for the people, not for the individual. He promised to campaign door to door to bring his view before the Mahwah voters.
