This Day in History: 1954-02-15
The “Play and Do” Nursery School opened at 111 Oweno Road. Louis Karpowich, Chairman of the Zoning board of Adjustment, announced that a variance had been granted to permit the opening of the school. Mrs. Lillian Troop, its director and psychologist, was formerly on the staff of the University of Chicago Nursery School. Three experienced teachers and a nurse completed the staff of the new venture. Its program was said to have been approved by the Early Childhood Division of the State Education Department. The school accepted students from three to five years of age. The program hours were between 9 to 11:30 AM. It was the only pre-kindergarten program in the Mahwah area.
