The Ramsey High School boys basketball team won the first state championship ever won by a Ramsey team. They defeated Millburn 56-50 for the Group II title. The Millburn team had won nineteen straight games but Ramsey put on their best performance of the year never being headed after the first quarter. They led by three at the half. Millburn tied at 33 all early in the second half but Ramsey regained the lead never to be headed again. Two busloads of fans accompanied the team bus to the contest held in the Elizabeth Armory. Bill DeMaryine, co-scoring leader of the Rams with Jim Williams at 217 points for the season was particularly effective during the playoffs by scoring 62 points in the four games.
