This Day in History: 1946-07-26
The Ramapo Valley Chapter of the Red Cross announced that they had received a special award from British authorities for their work to aid British hospitals during the war. A certificate of appreciation came from the Central Hospital Supply Service of the British Red Cross and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and was signed by the Duchess of Gloucester, the president of the Supply Service. She was the sister-in-law of the reigning monarch, George VI. The Chapter used the occasion to remind local residents of the many tasks which the Chapter was still undertaking. These included the making of hospital dressings, pajamas, bed jackets, and layettes. The Home Service was still active, as was the Public Health Nursing Service and the First Aid and Water Safety Services. (Bristow)
