Staff Sergeant John Vielinski was home on a thirty-day convalescent furlough from the Army. He was the son of Mrs. Antoinette and the late Joseph Vielinski of Island Road, Mahwah She Vielinski had lost his left arm to a German mortar shell in action in France. This was the second time he had been wounded during his seven-month tour of combat duty in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster. He would return to the Lawson General Hospital in Atlanta for further treatment after his leave was up. His brother Stanely was also serving overseas.
