This Day in History: 1944-05-04
The Ramsey Journal published a report from Lt. John Tisdale, son of the Supervising Principal of the Borough Schools. He had seen the sinking of the destroyer DeKoven on February 1, 1943. He did not know at the time that another Ramsey serviceman, Machinist Mater First Class Victor Y. Matthews was on board until he saw a notice, also in the Journal, that the Navy had declared him killed in action after being missing for a year. Tisdale was an infantry officer in the South Pacific Area. He had entered his service in September 1941 and had been overseas for two years. (Bristow)
