This Day In History: 1942-01-31
The first statewide test of air raid sirens was held. Because the Township is so large there were parts where the Mahwah siren could not easily be heard, so the Township Civil Defense Committee urged surrounding towns to join in the drill to test whether all part of the Township could hear at least some town’s siren. Handbills were distributed to warn people of the event and a survey taken of the results. The State Defense council announced that if an actual air raid were to take place at noon, the hour designated for the test the standard signal would be given twice.
