This Day in History: 1941-08-24
The commander of the Third Naval District in New York announced that one of the fifty over-aged destroyers sent to England in the destroyers-for-bases agreement of September, 1940 had been renamed the “Ramsey”. The former USS Meade was being used for convoy duty. Like all the destroyers, they had been given the names of British and American cities. Recently the first of these ships to be sunk, the former “Hopewell” renamed the “Bath” went down in the North Atlantic. It had been operated by a Norwegian crew. No information was given out as to the whereabouts of the “Ramsey”. (Bristow)
