This Day in History: 1911-03-04
Mr. Hicks, the poormaster, reported to the Town Board of a case of child neglect and abuse. A 21-year-old epileptic William Jennings of Mahwah was being confined in an unheated attic. He had no clothes and was not being fed adequately. Both of his feet had frozen and several toes had fallen off from gangrene. Physicians at the Hackensack Hospital fear his leg may have to be amputated. Superintendent Brett arrested the father and had him committed to the jail in Hackensack.
