This Day in History: 1908-07-21
When the belly band on his new racing wagon broke, Assemblyman James Devine Jr. of Mahwah was thrown out and injured his leg. Since the horse was rigged with a speeding harness there were no breeches fastened to the shaft, and when the ben broke the wagon ran up on the horse, frightening him. Mr. Devine was able to stop the horse but sustained a painful leg injury and now walks with a limp. (Bristow)
