Collection Details
Biographical / Historical Note: The materials were gathered by Stephen Stringer Lush (1914-1989). He was a naval officer who served during World War II in the Pacific aboard PT boats and also as an intelligence officer. He marries Mary Rich in 1959, and lived in Old Lyme, CT from 1977 to his death. He was the son of William Gansavoort Lush (1880-1960) and Rose Mahler (1889-1983) who lived for a time on Armour Road in the Cragmere section of Mahwah in the 1930s.
William Lush also served in the military and the navy, between 1906-1916, including the New York National Guard, the U.S. Army as Captain in the Army Tank Coprs during World War I. He then worked for the Radio Corporation of America as Assistant European Manager, and Director of Radiotelegrafica Brasilia in Rio de Janeiro. He married Rose Mahler in 1911 in New York, and Anna Maria Slinkers in 1931 in Paris.
Rose Mahler Lush divorced William Lush and she remained in Mahwah operating a gift shop.
The Lush family had a long military tradition, and were members of the Society of the Cincinnati, a hereditary order drawn from officers in the American Revolution. They were descended from Stephen Lush (1753-1825), who served as an aide de camp to Governor Clinton in the Revolutionary War. Steven Stringer Lush served as president of the New York Branch.
