Ramapo College Panel Discussion: A Student Perspective

From November 9, 2019

Members of the first class at Ramapo College Cynthia Brennan, Arthur Chill, John Durkin, and Nelson Ramirez discuss their experiences in 1971.  Moderated by Charlie Carreras.

They talk about the challenges they faced — the college was still under construction with no dorms — and about the unique experimental education the College offered. Students played an integral role in the development of the college, building a sense of community; they shared a purpose that still marks Ramapo today.

Ramapo College Panel Discussion: A Faculty Perspective

From January 11, 2020

With first-year Ramapo College faculty and staff Flavia Alaya, Mitch Kahn, Pam Bischoff, and Bev Dunn.  Moderated by Charlie Carreras.

The faculty hired to open Ramapo College had a unique role in developing innovative curriculum for an experimental college. Brought in only a few months before the school opened, they had to scramble to develop classes, policies, and governance. When classes began in 1971 the buildings were not all completed and some faculty had to teach at the Nike Missile Base, while construction continued on campus. The panelists will share their stories of teaching, working with students, and overcoming the challenges of Ramapo’s first year.
