Newspaper Digitization Project Second Informational Meeting

May 14, 2018 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The Mahwah Museum is delighted to announce it has received a ,000 grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH). The grant will support a one-year pilot program to digitize newspaper clippings from the museum’s collections. A community-building project, we invite the help of local students, teachers, history buffs, museum members, and our neighbors to work together to learn about and preserve our history. The clippings will be stored in a database indexed by names and organizations.

“We have boxes and boxes of old newspapers clippings in our archives, but they are unorganized and we can’t easily find information when we need it. This grant will help us tell the story of our region’s past in exhibits and help us to help researchers,” said Cathy Moran Hajo, the Museum’s archives director. “Best of all, the articles are fun to read.”

We are holding a second organizing meeting at Mahwah Museum on May 14, at 7:00 pm. We will then run a series of  workshops to train volunteers and digitize the clippings. Though we are based in Mahwah, our clippings cover many local towns, including Ramsey, Allendale, Suffern and Upper Saddle River. Volunteers will use scanners, cameras, and smart phones to digitize the clippings. Then we will describe them in a database, indexing names of people, businesses, and other organizations.

This meeting will also include a Training Meeting for those who already are ready to volunteer. The training meeting (for those who have already come to an informational meeting) will begin around 7:30 PM.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

We would love to see you on the 14th! Refreshments will be served!
