Joyce Kilmer was still a budding young poet in New York City, virtually unknown in major literary circles, when he purchased two plots of land in Mahwah’s Cragmere Park in 1911 and moved into his new house in 1912. The natural beauty, fresh mountain air and resources he found here quickly became significant elements to raising a family and rising to become one of America’s most celebrated poets. “We are now back in Mahwah, thank God,” he wrote a friend. “It’s the chief thing I thank Him for of all the splendid things He’s given me — this home of mine.” This is the story of Joyce Kilmer’s discovery of the magic of Mahwah.
